Våtmark
This is a project developed by the design studio Nåme, the design team consist of Louisa Juvall Molin, Matilda Karlsson, Felicia Litorell and Hannah Willén.
Våtmark targets Global Goals:
15.1 Preserve and restore important wetland ecosystem
12.8 Communicate the importance of peat-free soil.
Våtmark is a starter kit for indoor cultivation, suitable for the windowsill.
Research
The research includes:
Field trip to wetland.
Starter kits for cultivation.
The ecosystem of wetlands.
Peat and circularity.
The growing trend of cultivation.
One of the reasons fragile wetland ecosystems are threatened today is the extraction of peat for horticulture, which significantly increases greenhouse gas emissions by releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere. Most soil products today contain peat, despite the availability of great alternatives. However, larger efforts are needed to create meaningful change. With Våtmark, we aim to nudge new greenhouse owners in the right direction by providing them with a liter of peat-free soil. As we present greenhouse to reduce greenhouse emissions.
The design process began with inspiration from the wetlands. Through hand sketching, product shape and properties were explored. 3D printing was used to test proportions, functionality, and materiality. These iterations led to a final 1:1 scale prototype.
After exploring different styles of green houses, we went for a minimalistic design putting empathizes on the materials and its expression.

Result
Våtmark are an indoor greenhouse, designed as a starting kit for cultivating. Peat-free soil helps preserve important ecosystem in the wetlands and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by storing the carbon in the ground. To live a more sustainable life, we must make conscious choices in everything we do. Growing vegetables at home helps reduce emissions related to food waste, fertilizers and transportation.
